Back-to-School Photo Tips Every Parent Should Know (As Seen on CTV Morning Live Ottawa)

The first day of school is one of those moments every parent wants to remember. But in the middle of the morning rush — packed lunches, backpacks, and kids full of nervous excitement — it can feel impossible to grab a good photo.

This week, I had the privilege of joining CTV Morning Live Ottawa to share some of my favourite back-to-school photo tips. Whether you’re snapping photos on your phone or with a camera, these simple tricks will help you capture photos you’ll actually want to print and frame.

Ottawa photographer Farrah Sanjari joined CTV Morning Live Ottawa to share back-to-school photo tips for parents. Learn how to use natural light, simple props, and playful posing ideas to capture stress-free, at-home school photos with kids.

1. Find the Best Morning Light

You don’t need a fancy setup to get beautiful light. Your front door or porch is often the best spot. Have your kids face the open shade so the light is soft and flattering, and avoid harsh midday sun that creates squinting and shadows.

2. Keep the Background Simple

Skip the cluttered kitchen or busy driveway. A clean background, like your front steps, door, or even a plain wall, makes your child the focus of the photo.

3. Make it a Tradition

Props can turn a simple picture into a keepsake. A chalkboard sign with the grade, a favourite book, or even their backpack tells the story of who they are in that moment. Repeat the same idea year after year and you’ll create a collection of photos your kids will love looking back on.

4. Keep Kids Engaged

Kids don’t love standing still for long, and that’s okay. Give them something to do — hold the sign, spin around, or pull a silly face. Take one “smiley” photo and then one “fun” photo. You’ll end up with genuine expressions you’ll treasure.

5. Don’t Forget a Family Shot

Parents, get in the frame too. Use a tripod or selfie stick, set a 3–10 second timer, and jump in for a hug or a walking shot. It doesn’t need to be perfect — the point is being in the photo together.

6. Remember, It’s About the Memory

Whether you use a professional camera or your phone, the most important thing is capturing the moment, not perfection. Years from now, your child will love looking back on the excitement of their first day, no matter if their hair was a little messy or the backpack was too big.
